The IL Internship Program will provide opportunities for people with disabilities to prepare for, attain and maintain paid employment while participating in an innovative community program. The program will assist individuals in making employment choices, weighing out risks, and gaining ownership over their personal career goals.

In partnership with core staff of the Independent Living Resource Centre, Interns will work within the designated communities to promote awareness of people with disabilities and provide positive public education on disability related information. Interns will also have opportunity to work with other community organizations, government departments, and educational facilities to promote the philosophies of Independent Living across the province.

The program is divided into two phases; Skill Development and Work Placement. The Skill Development Phase will see Interns developing their own career plan while creating a portfolio of career related skills.

A one-week Team Building Training Session will take place in St. John’s where Interns will work directly at the ILRC to learn more about our programs and services and develop community contacts to share locally in their designated areas. The Work Placement Phase will see Interns developing and presenting community consultations, working with other community organizers and increasing public awareness of disability related information.

Interns hired will be supported in all areas of their work. We consider our Internship Program to be a learning experience in which Interns gain valuable work skills through the completion of their daily tasks.
